先日、友人が
「菩提樹は英語でLime treeだ」
ということを言った。ライムということはないだろうと高をくくったのだけど、
いやいや。Lime treeでした。
調べてみたところ、

ものすごくまとめると、
・英国英語 → lime tree
・米国英語 → linden tree
・どちらも、ドイツ語のLindenbaumに由来。
・柑橘類である、あのライムとは無縁。
“Li”まではどちらも同じだけど、その次が”n”と”m”なのに
語源が同じってことがあるんだそうだ。
上記引用中には、その理由は書いてなくって、
現代英（ブリティッシュ）語に変化した結果、”lime”になった、ということしか
わからないです。
